Run-of-the-river hydroelectricity (ROR) projects are dramatically different in design and appearance from conventional hydroelectric projects.
Traditional hydro dams store enormous quantities of water in reservoirs, necessitating the flooding of large tracts of land and includes environmental disruption including tree-cutting and “tunneling” which is capital intensive and takes 3-5 years for traditional hydro project build-outs.
In contrast, small run-of-river projects do not require a large impoundment of water, which is a key reason why such projects are often referred to as environmentally friendly.
Hydrotec Renewables is building Small ROR Hydro projects within 7-9 months with civil engineering & excavation expense at 1/3rd the cost of traditional hydro schemes delivering greater Project IRRs to investors, shorter payback periods of 3-5 years thru a more eco-friendly approach that has met the approval requirements of Philippines regulatory agencies including DOE, ERC, DENR along with Project Site Voter approvals for Hydrotec Renewables 1st Project Series of Dept. of Energy’s Service Contract Awards.
Our platform of 38 Philippines Small ROR hydro projects encompass an aggregate capacity to deliver over 200MW of renewable power to both metro and rural project community consumption in the areas of Luzon and Visayas including Metro Manila and Negros.
Longitudinal Profile — Cascading the Marikina River by Small Hydro Power Plants.
By cascading the Marikina River small reservoirs will be created, a water storage volume of ca. 800 Million m3 - similar to Angat reservoir - will be reached, which can contribute to a more efficient flood control and much lower sedimental inflow for the areas of Metro Manila, Pasig River, Laguna Lake and Manila Bay.
Furthermore, with the installation of Hydraulic Cleaning Machines and Trashracks at each of our Small Hydro Plants, any Solid Wastes and Debris will be removed from the rivers.
Hydrotec Renewables is positioned to sell power production thru several options that address range of power demand including the largest Utility and Corporate Power Buyers.
Hydrotec’s flexibility to manage multiple market channels is designed to optimize pricing controls for special situation spot & long-term power market transactions & yield the highest premium price per Kwh average.
Hydrotec’s power sales are generated the following:
5.9 Pesos or 13 cents (US) per kWh with 20 Year Term.
In July 2012, the Philippines Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) approved the following FIT rates based on the petition of the National Renewable Energy Board: Run-of-River Hydropower - 5.90 Pesos or 13 cents per kWh.
As approved, eligible Renewable Energy plants will be entitled to the above mentioned FIT rates for a period of 20 Years. Inclusive is a 7 year Tax holiday, Tax exemption on Equipment imported and several other incentives.
9-13 Pesos or 21-28 cent (US) per kWh.
Within the Hydrotec’s portfolio of project communities large volume corporate Power buyers are in negotiations to finalize corporate power off-take agreements otherwise defined as Power Purchase Agreements.
13-24 pesos or 28-50 cent (US) per kWh.
The Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) began Commercial Operations in Luzon in June 2006 and in the Visayas in December 2010.
It is a centralized venue for buyers and sellers to trade electricity as a commodity where prices are based on actual use (demand) and availability (supply).
Hydrotec has received interest from Electrical Cooperatives, Philippines Utility distributors and Corporate Power Buyers for Power purchase agreement as Hydrotec’s project platform in overlaps their existing power distribution footprint and are always seeking reliable renewable power suppliers such as Hydrotec Renewables.

Hydrotec Renewables begins construction of their first project series in 1st quarter of 2014.
Each of our Small Hydro Project Site designs minimize capital expenditure required for civil engineering which typically represents 70% of a traditional Hydro Project construction budget and require years.
In comparison, Hydrotec Project budgets can reduce civil engineering & excavation costs to less than 30% of typical Project Budget.
We are utilizing only the highest quality small hydro turbines from qualified German manufacturers which have over 50 year life and are installed with multi-year warranties and maintenance agreements.
Our German turbines are designed site specific that is aligned to Hydrotec’s project site portfolio attributes that include site characteristics that can provide optional migration or change out replacement of turbines to any one of Hydrotec’s multiple site locations.
Hydrotec Renewables Small Hydro Project Sample Timeline :
Hydrotec’s first priority was to apply a proprietary Project Site Selection criteria which initiated in 2009. Our team completed an exhaustive research effort to identify & qualify a premium portfolio of Small ROR Project sites from the hundreds of Philippine’s small/mini hydro site locations.
Thru the process Hydrotec’s team compiled an extensive database of hydrological, topographical and meteorological data-points in which site specific criteria formed the basis of Hydrotec’s decision to secure projects.
Site locations which have met strict Pre-Feasibility approval requirements including:
1). Historical Rainfall patterns & River Flow Rates that support Hydrotec Project Economic Forecasts.
2). Close access to Public Infrastructure including Toll Roads, Grid Interconnections & Corporate Power Purchasers for Water to Wire & Off-Take Agreements.
3). Project site attributes in which Hydrotec ‘s projects eliminate the need for tree-cutting or environmental disruption to flower or fauna or displace the communities of people living within Project Site locations.
4). Project Sites in which both political and public community support was supportive to achieve Voter approvals along with Land & Water Rights.
5). Project Characteristics in which civil excavation and build out are minimal and do not require “tunneling” or old school Hydro schemes which are capital intensive & take years to build-out in contrast to Hydrotec’s project build-out timeframes of 7-9 months and meet expedient DOE & regulatory reviews & approvals.
Hydrotec’s Project Portfolio now encompasses over 38 Small ROR Project Sites representing over 200MW of future installed capacity with additional plans to expand.
Our projects sites are located in the areas of Luzon and Visayas including sites along the Marikina River System and it’s Tributaries along with projects sites involving the NIA with the support of Indigenous communities based on Hydrotec’s eco-friendly project design and development plans.
6). Project Sites which are replicable to our sustainable design and have reduced exposure to Acts of God such as Typhoons and Earthquakes while enduring extreme weather conditions.
